GWMS Mission Statement
The mission of George Washington Middle School, as a part of Putnam County Schools, is to ensure that every student masters the curriculum and achieves academic success. We will dedicate our time, resources, and practices to closing the achievement gap, bringing every student to mastery and beyond, and preparing every student for success in a diverse and changing world. Working with the home and community, we will build a supportive system characterized by ethical behaviors, mutual respect, professionalism, and collaboration.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PUTNAM COUNTY FAMILIES:
Putnam County Community Action which coordinated the Putnam Holiday Helpers program is no longer in existence. Please be aware that this means there will not be assistance for needy families from this organization. In years past GWMS made applications available but we did not have many families receive assistance from this program. Just the same, we are wanting to make you aware since this is a significant change.
Congratulations Mrs. Slack
George Washington Middle School Assistant Principal Tiauna Slack has been honored by the West Virginia Center for Professional Development as a West Virginia Principal’s Leadership Academy Distinguished Scholar.
Slack was one of twenty-eight school administrators honored this year for exemplary action research projects completed at the 2008 Principal's Leadership Academy.
The academy offers administrators an opportunity to hone their leadership skills in a collegial atmosphere based on the concept of continuous improvement. Working with team leaders and peers, each administrator develops an action plan that will positively impact student performance and achievement in his or her school.
In addition to achieving the distinction of being the only new administrator so honored, Slack received $750 to institute her plan at George Washington Middle School.
Mr. Chuck Hatfield, Putnam County Superintendent, praises Slack for her accomplishment. “Mrs. Slack is to be commended for her hard work and dedication in producing an exemplary plan for improving her school,” he stated. “In the 21st Century, it is more important than ever for school administrators to focus on instructional leadership and student achievement, and Mrs. Slack’s award illustrates her ability to do just that,” he said.
