OUT OF ZONE TRANSFERS Everyone attending school out of their home school zone is required by Putnam County Schools to complete an out-of-zone request each year. These forms were mailed to the homes of our our-of-zone students in April. These need to be returned before the end of the year so that they can be approved or denied prior to the start of school in the fall. Approval will be granted whenever enrollment numbers and resources permit.
2008-09 DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING for three to five year old children will be held at Teays Valley Presbyterian Church on the following Fridays from 9-11:30 am and 12:30-2:00 pm: Aug. 29, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Jan. 9, Feb. 6, Mar. 6, April 3, May 1, June 5 (Birth to Three students only). If you are concerned about your preschool child’s development in any of the following areas: speech and language, hearing, learning ability and readiness for school, or physical motor skills, please have your child screened as soon as possible. Call Karren Sparks at the board office to make an appointment (586-0500 ext.154). Early intervention with any delay of development is of utmost importance to your child's education.
MEDICATION We are required to have on file a ‘Record of Prescribed Medication’ form completed and signed by your doctor before we can administer medication to your child while at school. This form is in the school handbook which was given to your child at the beginning of the school year. If you cannot locate your handbook, forms are available in the office. This also applies to non-prescription medications such as cough drops, Tylenol, Advil, etc. SAFETY 1. Please do not drop children off before 7:10 as there is no supervision before that time. 2. To maintain a safe environment for our children, we would ask that parents NOT enter the building at the end of the day (during dismissal) to pick students up early. Please be reminded that if you are picking up a child at the end of the day, we request that you wait outside the front doors to both sides of the entryway. Waiting in the hall ways, outside classroom doors, etc., can be disruptive to the closing of the day with your child(ren). If the weather is too wet or cold for you to wait outside, please feel free to wait in the comfort of your car until the buses run and we release the children who walk or are picked up by their parents. 3. During school hours, parents should not go through the gate on the left side of the building. Parents should not park on the side parking lot or in the area outside the kitchen/gym/portables. This gate is for staff members only to access parking areas. With our traffic patterns it is necessary that everyone the inside lane is for buses and the outside land is for all other traffic. Please do not tie up the parking places for too long, unless you are a volunteer. Staff have to use this area for parking. 4. Classroom visits are made by appointment only! Call the school office at 562-9351 to schedule an appointment. If you are dropping off books, snacks, lunch money, lunch boxes, etc. for your child/children, please bring these items to the office and we will deliver them for you.
Attendance
Research shows that regular school attendance is vital to academic success and that student achievement improves with good attendance. Students must attend school regularly and be on time to classes in order to maximize instructional benefits. Additionally, regular school attendance and punctuality develop self-discipline and responsibility. Not only is school attendance compulsory, but it should also be encouraged and expected.
Putnam County Schools will cooperate with parents and students to try to improve their children's attendance, but parents and students must assume ultimate responsibility for regular school attendance.

Parents may schedule a conference with school officials, and schools may offer services to help keep students in school.
10 Absences On the tenth (10th) unexcused absence, the Putnam County Schools Attendance Director sends a legal notice advising of the consequences should the student continue to accumulate unexcused absences.
More than 10 Absences If the student and parents or guardians do not comply with the provisions of the ten (10) day legal notice, the Attendance Director may be file a petition with the magistrate or Circuit Court against the student as delinquent or against the parents or guardians for neglect.
Please understand that it is your responsibility to make sure that your child(ren) is on time and present every day at Conner Street Elementary. State law requires that children attend school and provides for penalties for parents who allow children to be absent without good cause. If your child is absent, please send a doctor's excuse or note stating the reason for the absence with your child when he/she returns from an absence. Putnam County’s attendance policy allows for six parent notes a year. After six the absence is unexcused. After five unexcused absences you will receive a letter from the school and after ten you will be contacted by the county attendance director. However, there is no limit on medical excuses. Attendance is one of the points on which our school is scored in No Child Left Behind so please get those excuses in. MAKE-UP WORK will be given upon return to school unless absence is for three days or more. Work for absences of three or more days will be given at 2:30 pm on the third day. Applies to vacations as well.
Students cannot be checked out between 2:00-2:30 pm unless they have a medical appointment or an emergency. The students will be dismissed after the buses depart. Please allow us to dismiss bus-riders first and then dismiss pick-ups and walkers.
A student is considered tardy when s/he arrives to school or class after 7:45 a.m.- the time designated as the beginning of the school day. Tardy students, accompanied by their parent, must report directly to the secretary. Upon arrival, parents will sign in students on the attendance list. Students must have an admit note from the office to be admitted to class. Students who are consistently tardy may be referred to the County Attendance Task Force.
