Intramurals are held daily during the lunch breaks. During good weather, activities are planned for the football area. Students may participate in the activity, walk the track, or sit on the bleachers and socialize. During bad weather, activities are planned in the gym. Students may participate in the activity or sit on the bleachers, watch, and socialize. Good sportsmanship is expected of all participates and students may be banned from future participation if misbehavior occurs. Poca Middle School belongs to the Mid-Valley Conference and follows all rules of the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission. Students may participate in football, cheerleading, girls and boys basketball, and boys and girls track Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA to be eligible to participate. A physical examination must be conducted before beginning to practice and may be downloaded by accessing the WVSSAC website at http://www.wvssac.org . Other Activities Other activities offered at Poca Middle School are yearbook staff, band, Natural Helpers, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. National Junior Honor Society Poca Middle School Chapter Selection Requirements: · Open to students who have attended Poca Middle School for at least one semester. · Cumulative grade point average must be 3.25 or higher. This means that grades earned in previous years of middle school will be part of the GPA. · After meeting the attendance and GPA requirements, candidates will be notified and asked to fill out the Student Activity Information Form. The Faculty Council will then evaluate nominees on their service, leadership, citizenship, and character. · The entire faculty will be asked to review recommendations of the Faculty Council before final selections are made. · The selection of new, active members shall be held once each year (with the exception of 2006-2007, the charter year). · The final decision is determined from a vote taken by the Faculty Council (the adviser is a non-voting member). · Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony. · Active members who transfer from this school, will be given a letter indicated the status of his/her membership signed by the adviser. · Active members who transfer in from other schools will automatically be accepted for membership in this chapter and will be granted one semester to attain the requirements for membership and continue to maintain them. Discipline and Dismissal: · Any student who falls below the standards of scholarship, leadership, character, citizenship, or service may be dismissed from the Poca Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. A member of the National Junior Honor Society is expected to maintain his/her academic standing and take an active role in service and leadership to his/her school and community. · If a student’s GPA falls below the requirement, he or she will be given a written warning and a time period needed for improvement. If the student cannot improve his/her GPA in the time allowed, the student will face possible dismissal from the chapter. · Warning letters will be issued for violation of school conduct such as excessive absenteeism or tardiness, or any behavioral issue which results in disciplinary action. · Violations of the law or school rules can result in dismissal of a member. · A member facing dismissal will receive written notification indicating the reason for possible dismissal from the adviser. · A member facing dismissal will be given the opportunity to respond to the charge against him/her at a hearing before the Faculty Council. · The results of the Faculty Council vote will be reviewed by the principal, and then if confirmed, expressed in a letter sent to the student, parents, and principal. Dismissed members must surrender any membership emblems to the adviser. · When a student is dismissed or resigns, he/she is no longer a member and may never again be considered for membership in the National Junior Honor Society.
