ATTENDANCE

Putnam County School Attendance Policy

Every student is expected to come to school every day.  Regular attendance and punctuality is required in the work place and these habits need to be learned at school.  Good citizenship includes responsibility for personal commitments.  Regular attendance is directly related to good learning.

Every student is expected to be in school all day, every day.  Exceptions to this are granted only for specific reasons:  serious illness, death in the family, school sponsored curricular or co-curricular activities, religious obligations, legal obligations, calamity such as fire, flood, or other emergencies, educational leaves approved by the administration and bus run cancellations.  An absence is considered excused only when appropriate verification is provided to the school.

A student is truant (1) when the student voluntarily chooses not to attend school or (2) when the student fails to provide valid verification for which absences might be otherwise excused.

After five absences in a block, a letter shall be sent to the parents indicating that the student’s attendance is being monitored.  Any student who misses more than six sessions of a class (unexcused) will lose driving privileges to school and may receive mandatory remediation during lunch hour.  After ten unexcused absences in a block, the county attendance director shall issue legal notification to parents of pending legal action.  On the fifteenth unexcused absence in a block, a petition shall be filed in Circuit Court against the parents or guardians for child neglect or against the student as a delinquent.

Consequences to the student may include revocation of the driver’s license and removal from the home to a juvenile facility.  Consequences to parents may include fines or other severe penalties.

The West Virginia Board of Education has established a minimum standard of 93 percent average daily attendance.  Schools which do not maintain this rate of attendance may be placed on probation.  This means that a student may miss no more than six times per term per class and still  maintain this standard.  Furthermore, a student who misses more than six blocks (excused or unexcused) per class, per term is seriously impaired from mastering the curriculum of the course.

EARLY DEPARTURE

To leave early, you must have the permission of an adult office staff person (secretary or administration). Once students have arrived on the Poca High School campus, they may not leave unless they have permission of the principal or designee.

1. Pupils may be dismissed for medical or dental appointments for such time as the specific appointments in question shall require.

2. A pupil may be dismissed upon request of parents for reasons involving death in the family, illness, legal or religious obligations, or serious emergency in the home.

3. Pupils shall not be dismissed for outside activities such as music or dance lessons, hair appointments, photography sessions, or eating lunch off campus.

4. School activities shall not be an excuse for early departure (County Policy JEDC). Parent or guardian must sign the student out. Students will not be permitted to use the phones when dismissed for an activity.

5 . STUDENTS MAY NOT EARLY DEPART WITH OTHER STUDENTS.

To leave school early for the reasons listed above, a student must obtain approval of the early departure by completing the following procedure:

1. Before 8:05 a.m., the student must turn in to the office staff a note with the following information:

a. Student's name and grade

b. Date and time of early departure

 c. Reason for the early departure

d. Telephone number where the parent/guardian can be reached

between 8: 05 a.m. and the time of the early departure

e. Signature of the parent/guardian

2. Office staff will call the parent/guardian and verify the early departure. If the early departure cannot be verified by phone, it will not be approved.

3. When the note is verified, an early departure pass will be sent to the student in class. The pass will excuse the student from class and should be presented to the office staff as the parent/guardian signs the student out in the office. A student is required to sign out on an office log at the time of early departure.

4. In every instance of leaving early (including school activities) the student is responsible for completing any missed class work, homework, and/or tests. All early sign-outs will count toward days missed in accordance with the Putnam County Attendance policy.

5. The school administration may deny early departures for non--legitimate reasons or if the above procedure is not followed.

6. If a student misses 20 minutes or more of a class period, the student will be counted absent from that class. Otherwise, three (3) unexcused early departures in any class or from school will constitute one absence.

TARDIES

TARDINESS TO SCHOOL

If you arrive late for school, report to the main office.  When you sign the

sign-in sheet, the secretary will give you a pass to class.

A student who misses 20 minutes or more of class will be counted absent from class. The absence will count for truancy and driver's license revocation. Three unexcused tardies in any class constitute an absence. Three or more tardies to 1st at block will result in suspension or loss of driving privileges.

TARDINESS TO CLASS

A little late is too late. If you have been detained in the office or by a teacher, ask for a late excuse from the person detaining you before reporting to your next scheduled class. Being detained by a teacher or the office is the only valid reason for reporting late for class. All other reasons will be considered invalid and the matter will be considered as a discipline problem. Student should be inside the classroom door before the bell starts ringing. Three unexcused tardies in anyone class or to school will count as one class/school absence. Repeated offenses will result in additional detention or suspension.

Excessive accumulation of unexcused tardies in a class will be dealt with following the Responsible Student Standards:

1, 2 Tardies {in a class in a term)-Student Warned

3 Tardies Detention hall-3 hrs. 1 unexcused abs.

4 Tardies - 4 hours detention: parent notice

5 Tardies - Parent conference required to readmit to class ISS
