Hurricane High Clubs

 

 

Listed below are clubs that are available with the dues, sponsor, possible restrictions, and a brief description of each.

 

Environmental Club – Dues-none – Mrs. Naylor – Members help the environment by volunteering to work with recycling, road cleanup and other projects for the community.

 

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) – Dues-$5 – Mrs. Varney – FCA focuses on serving our school by equipping, empowering and encouraging students to make a difference for Christ.  You do not have to be an athlete to be a member.

 

French Club – Dues-$3 – Ms. Nash – An involved group that holds monthly meetings to discover French culture and perform community service projects.  There is also an emphasis on communications in the French language.

 

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) – Dues-$10 – Mrs. Schamp – Must be enrolled in or have taken a business class – A business-based club whose goal is to develop leadership and aid in community service.

 

Future Educators of America (FEA) – Dues-$5 – Mrs. Varney – FEA focuses on planning and developing activities for students who are interested in exploring teaching as a career.  We also sponsor “Teacher Appreciation Week” each spring to show HHS teachers how much they are treasured.

 

Future Scientists and Engineers of America – Dues-$5 – Mrs. Tolley – Must be enrolled in or have taken an advanced science class – Take part in activities that promote science fields (engineering, medical, pure science), guest speakers, field trips.  Some community service activities and social activities.

 

History Club – Will begin second term.  Details to follow.

 

Interact Club – Dues-$5 – Mr. Higginbotham – The Interact Club, short for International Action, gives students opportunities to learn about other cultures while performing community service.  This student-run group is affiliated with the Rotary Club. 

 

Key Club – Dues-$15 – Mrs. Fink, Mrs. Dunkle – Dedicated to encouraging leadership and community service.  Students attend weekly meetings, participate in fundraisers and service projects, and are encouraged to become involved at the division, state and international levels.

 

Mu Alpha Theta – Dues-$10 – Mrs. Goode – Must have an overall 3.0 GPA, have taken or are currently taking Trig, maintain a certain GPA in all math courses.  See Mrs. Goode for details.  The purpose is to promote scholarship in and enjoyment and understanding of mathematics.

 

National Art Honor Society – Dues-$10 – Ms. Meadows – Must have a 3.0 GPA in art and be in an art class or in tech art sometime during the year – An involved group who are interested in art and the promotion of art in the community.  Must be willing to work off school grounds and beyond the school day.  Will receive community service time for all work done in the community.

 

National Honor Society – Dues-$10 – Mrs. Grim – Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA and in 10-12 grade to apply in early spring, membership determined by the Faculty Council – A national organization which requires strong leadership, service, character, and academic achievement.

 

Partner’s Club – Dues-$5 – Mrs. McCormick – Members volunteer for Special Olympics activities, help with fund raising, serve as partners for field trips and a wide variety of social, educational, and athletic activities with Mrs. McCormick’s students.

 

Photography Club – Dues-none – Ms. Meadows – Must have a camera – For students interested in taking photographs on and off school campus.  You must pay for all your own supplies and travel expenses.  Trips depend on students and available sites and times (all after school or weekends).

 

Read Aloud Volunteers (RAV) – Dues-$3 – Mrs. Weddington – Offers members the rewarding experience of reading to and working with children.  RAV’s primary focus is working with the public libraries and local elementary schools to provide “story hours.”  The evening story hours, usually held at the Putnam County Library and the Hurricane Branch Library, are geared for young children and revolve around a holiday theme and include book reading, snacks and a small craft.  We also observe national book celebration, one in the fall and one in the spring, by reading at local elementary schools.

 

Spanish Club – Dues-$3 – Mrs. Gibson, Mrs. Bedway, Mrs. Hughes – Open to all students interested in promoting the Spanish language and culture.  Members also involve themselves with community service projects.  The club sponsors an international reception to welcome foreign exchange students to our school.

 

Student Council –Dues-none – Ms. Cunningham – Elected by their peers – Represents the student body and sponsors activities to promote cooperation among the student, faculty, staff, and community.  Student Council also promotes school spirit.

 

Teenage Republican Club (TARS) – Dues-$5 – Mr. Higginbotham, Mrs. Grim – The purpose is to promote active political participation in government, promote the ideals of the party, and to provide valuable experience to enable young people to become strong leaders.  Members will work on school, community service, and bi-partisan projects.

 

Today Everyone Everywhere Needs Someone (TEENS) – Dues-$5 – Mrs. Dennison, Mrs. Ragle – A service club that teaches peer pressure reversal techniques to our feeder schools.  We also work with student council on battle of the classes during homecoming week.

 

Young Democrats of America – Dues-$5 – Mr. R. Ellis – This club works hard to elect democratic candidates, encourage youth involvement in the party, support the ideals of the party, and provide young people with the strength and experience they will need to lead our nation.

 

Youth Alive – Dues-none – Mrs. Hodges – A student led, student initiated group that meets to learn more about God and how to successfully minister and witness to those on our school campus.
