Putnam
County students displayed their winning artwork at The Commons in Hurricane as
a culmination of Putnam County’s Youth Art Month activities.
Students
from all elementary, middle and high schools participated in fairs at the
school level before competing countywide at the art show in March.
Superintendent
of Schools Chuck
Hatfield believes the arts are a vital part of the student experience.
“We know there’s a correlation between the arts and academic achievement, but besides
that, students who participate [in the arts] are more engaged in their schooling,
more satisfied with their learning, and more likely to complete high school,”
he stated. “Maybe more importantly, the arts give kids an opportunity to
develop their unique talents,” he added.
